My Focus

I am an architecture student at Virginia Tech whose focus and thesis is how architecture can be a driving force for coastal resiliency, while preserving, nurturing, and adapting the unique local cultures to the adverse times ahead.

I live in southern Maryland, where the effects of sea level rise are present often as roads onto peninsulas are submerged at key points — leaving a choice to submarine with your car or wait for the high tide to subside.

My family history can be found in the Dames Quarter, Deals Island, and Smith Island — history that is expected to wash away first.  Much of my home town is expected to be the first to disappear on the Western Shore as well.  The Chesapeake Bay's history and culture is not singular, it is comprised of an intertwining of the unique histories and cultures of each of its tributaries. Without these tributaries, much of Bay culture will be forgotten and lost.

Who am I?

I am an architecture student at Virginia Tech whose focus and thesis is how architecture can be a driving force for coastal resiliency, while preserving, nurturing, and adapting the unique local cultures to the adverse times ahead.

My professional ideology is not just that, but rather an underscore on how I [try to] live my life. Everyday I bike to campus. I've nearly cut out trash and non-recyclable plastic from how I live. Planning for my post-college life, I am in the midst of refitting a 1973 Gulfstar 41 foot ketch — to live on.  This renovation will be done sustainably, putting my actions where my mouth is. In the end, the goal is to live net-zero and off the grid.  Living on the boat will provide first-hand experience of the issues I focus on, beyond the experiences I already have.
